The Center for Systems Neuroscience (CSN) brings together research groups of the faculties of Biology, Physics and Human Medicine, the German Primate Center, and the three Max-Planck-Insitutes for Biophysical Chemistry, Experimental Medicine and Dynamics and Self-Organization. The Center was founded in the year 2002 and presently comprises more than 40 groups.

Research activities within the Center focus on biological fundamentals of human and animal behaviour, from single neurons and their connections to functional networks. In order to mentally initiate, plan and perform behaviour, the organism disposes of instinctive, automatic and cognitive functions. These include perception, learning, attention and memory performances as well as motor programs. These functions find their neural correlates in the nervous system and can often be attributed to specific brain areas. To be able to understand such complex abilities and systems, a multi-disciplinary approach is essential and particularly important for the system orientated neurosciences.

The intention is to bridge molecular genetical approaches, neurobiological research in invertebrates and primates as well as research on human brain capacity such as is performed in psychology, for example in research on learning and memory performance, or in psychiatry. To promote the training of young scientists the CSN initiated in 2003 the international Ph.D. program "Systems Neurosciences".

Speaker of the Center is Prof. Dr. Stefan Treue.
